Mannerheim Line, Fortification line in Finland

The Mannerheim Line was a defensive fortification line on the Karelian Isthmus built by Finland against the Soviet Union.

During the Winter War in 1939–40, it became famous as it significantly delayed the Soviet advance.

The line is named after Field Marshal Carl Gustaf Emil Mannerheim, the commander-in-chief of Finland's defence forces during the war.

Today, some parts of the line are preserved and open for public as a historical monument.

Despite its fame, the Mannerheim Line was not as heavily fortified as the Maginot Line or other famous fortification systems.
