Yuriev Monastery, Medieval monastery by Lake Ilmen, Veliky Novgorod, Russia
Located 5 kilometers south of Novgorod, the monastery stands on the left bank of the Volkhov River where it flows from Lake Ilmen.
The first documented evidence of the monastery dates to 1119 when Prince Vsevolod Mstislavich ordered construction of the stone Church of St. George.
The Church of St. George features three silver domes instead of the standard five, marking a departure from traditional Russian Orthodox architecture.
The monastery opens daily for visitors, with guided tours available in multiple languages through the main religious buildings and historical exhibitions.
The monastery served as burial ground for Novgorodian princes, including the mother of Alexander Nevsky and his brother Dmitri Shemiaka.
