Church of Saint George

The Church of Saint George is a stone religious building at Yuriev Monastery featuring three tall apses on its eastern side and two-tiered windows with distinctive niches. The structure appears solid and imposing, with thick walls and a central dome that rises above the entire composition.

Construction began in 1119 under Master Peter's direction and was completed in 1130 with support from Prince Mstislav. This early completion made it one of the oldest stone religious buildings in the Novgorod region.

The church holds religious services and contains fragments of 12th-century frescoes discovered during archaeological excavations in the altar area in 2014.

The building stands within the Yuriev Monastery grounds and is straightforward to reach when exploring the monastic complex. It helps to spend time viewing the exterior from different angles to appreciate the architectural details and overall proportions.

The interior shows a П-shaped floor plan with elevated choir galleries in the western section, creating a cross-shaped space beneath the central dome. Excavations in the 2010s uncovered fragments of 12th-century frescoes in the altar area, offering glimpses into the artistic decoration of that era.
