GUM, Department store in Moscow
GUM is the main department store in many cities of the former Soviet Union, known as State Department Store during the Soviet era.
The building was constructed between 1890 and 1893 by Alexander Pomerantsev and Vladimir Shukhov.
GUM has a rich cultural history, having survived the Russian Revolution, Soviet era, and now symbolizes consumer culture in modern Russia.
It's located on the Red Square, opposite the Kremlin, and houses about a hundred premium class stores.
Its unique architecture features a combination of elements of Russian medieval architecture and a steel framework and glass roof, a similar style to the great 19th-century railway stations of London.
