Дом учёных, Soviet modernist architecture center in Protvino, Russia.
The House of Scientists is a modernist concrete building in Protvino with multiple levels designed to serve different functions. Inside, it houses a concert hall, cafe, bar, and a room with a fireplace, creating a complete venue for gatherings and cultural events.
The building opened in 1972 after receiving approval from the USSR State Construction Committee. It was created as a cultural facility for the nearby Institute of High Energy Physics and became an important hub for scientific exchange.
The building served as a gathering place for physicists and researchers from the nearby High Energy Physics Institute, hosting lectures and scholarly exchanges. Notable visitors including French President Georges Pompidou and dissident scientist Andrei Sakharov came here to participate in scientific discussions.
The building is set within a forest landscape and integrated into the surroundings following Protvino's forest-city design concept. Keep in mind that the facility has been permanently closed in recent years and is no longer open to visitors.
The building was designed by Soviet sculptor Lev Lilie, who brought his artistic vision to the modernist concrete forms. It demonstrates how artists and engineers collaborated during the Soviet era to create functional structures with genuine artistic intent.
