Эрик Сапаев ячĕллĕ Мари оперăпа балет театрĕ, Opera and ballet theater in Yoshkar-Ola, Russia
The Eric Sapaev Mari Opera and Ballet Theater is the only professional opera and ballet house in the Republic of Mari El, located in the center of Yoshkar-Ola. It has a full stage and an auditorium that seats several hundred people per performance.
The theater was established in 1968 when it split from the region's Musical Drama Theater to become an independent institution. This separation gave Mari El its first dedicated opera and ballet company.
The theater stages works rooted in Mari folk stories and music alongside Russian classical repertoire, creating a program that feels unlike most regional theaters in Russia. Hearing the Mari language sung on stage during an opera is something few visitors expect to encounter.
The theater is in central Yoshkar-Ola and easy to reach on foot from most parts of the city center. It is worth checking the program in advance, as performances follow a seasonal schedule and popular shows can fill up quickly.
The theater bears the name of Erik Sapaev, a composer from Mari El who wove traditional Mari melodies into orchestral music. Some of the works performed here were written specifically for this stage and exist almost nowhere else in any repertoire.
