Oleneostrovsky burial ground is an archaeological site on an island in the Kola Bay of the Barents Sea. The location covers about 2350 square meters and contains 23 documented graves with different burial practices.
Excavations between 1947 and 1948 uncovered graves with wooden wells and evidence of cremation dating to around 2000 BCE. These findings show the burial practices and technical skills of the people who lived there.
The site shows how people hunted and lived in this northern region. The artifacts found there like tools, weapons, and an elk sculpture reveal what mattered to them and how they used the land.
The site lies northeast of Polyarny and is protected as a cultural monument. Access may be limited, so it is wise to check conditions in advance or arrange a local guide.
Genetic analysis of the remains reveals links to Siberian populations. This DNA evidence shows migration patterns that contrast with the people living in the peninsula today.
