Plaveč Castle, 13th-century castle ruins in Prešovský kraj, Slovakia.
The stone fortress stands on an elevated hill near the Poprad River valley, with remaining southeastern walls and a round tower intact.
Built around 1294 by nobleman Arnold as a border fortress, the castle protected merchants traveling between Hungary and Poland along trade routes.
The name originates from the Polovci tribe, whose light-haired men served as guardians of the border region during medieval times.
Visitors can reach the castle by a 10-minute walk from Plaveč village, making it suitable for families with children to explore.
The castle burned down in 1856 after its conversion to a classicist palace, leading to its current state as a partially preserved ruin.
