Phuket Giant Buddha, Buddhist monument on Nakkerd Hill, Karon, Thailand.
Phuket Giant Buddha is a white marble statue rising 45 meters on Nakkerd Hill near Karon, visible from many parts of the island. The structure stands on a reinforced concrete base that is 25 meters wide at its foundation.
Construction began in 2004 using 50 reinforced concrete piers driven 12 meters into the ground for stability. The project was approximately 80 percent complete by 2017.
The statue bears the name Phraphutthamingmongkhol-akenagakhiri, which represents Buddha in the gesture of subduing Mara, a symbolic act deeply meaningful to visitors who come to pray or meditate here. This spiritual symbolism connects the place to Thai Buddhist practice and devotion.
The site is open daily from 6:30 AM to 6:30 PM, and visitors should wear clothing that covers shoulders and knees. Free sarongs are available for those who need to cover up before entering.
The statue incorporates 135 tons of white jade marble imported from Myanmar, giving its white surface a distinctive luminous quality in sunlight. This material choice sets it apart from most other large Buddha statues in the region.
