Wat Phra Boromathat Chaiya Rat Worawihan, Buddhist temple in Wiang, Thailand.
Wat Phra Boromathat Chaiya Rat Worawihan is a Buddhist temple in Wiang, an old settlement in southern Thailand. The compound spreads around a central chedi, surrounded by smaller prayer halls, covered walkways and living quarters for the resident monastic community.
The temple emerged over twelve hundred years ago under the influence of the Srivijaya Empire, which controlled the region at that time. Centuries later, the compound came under the care of the royal temple administration and was declared a protected historic monument.
Local Buddhist ceremonies take place throughout the year, involving ritual offerings, prayers, and meditation sessions led by resident monks in traditional orange robes.
Visitors should remove their shoes before entering the prayer halls and make sure their shoulders and knees are covered. The compound lies near the historic core of Wiang and is easy to reach on foot.
Inside the chedi, relics are kept that local tradition says were brought from India to Southeast Asia. The architecture of the tower shows features of Javanese construction, pointing to old trade links between the cultures.
