Khok Kruat Formation, Geological formation in Nakhon Ratchasima Province, Thailand.
Khok Kruat Formation is a geological layer in northeastern Thailand spanning the Khorat Plateau, composed of red siltstones and sandstones. These rocks extend across broad areas and form the foundation for fossil discoveries throughout the region.
The rock layers formed during the Aptian stage of the Early Cretaceous, roughly 120 to 113 million years ago, when dinosaurs inhabited the area. Marine deposits reveal the region was periodically covered by water during that time.
Scientists from multiple countries conduct research at this formation to study the diverse collection of dinosaur fossils and ancient marine life remains.
The area is accessible to visitors who can orient themselves from Nakhon Ratchasima city and make use of available guides. Special permits are needed for excavation work or collecting rock samples.
At the Huai Dam Chum site, footprints from different two-legged dinosaurs remain preserved in the rock. Fossils of the horned plant-eater Psittacosaurus sattayaraki display special skeletal details of these early horned dinosaurs.
