Sunthorn Phu Memorial, Literary monument in Klaeng District, Rayong Province, Thailand
The Sunthorn Phu Memorial is a literary monument in Klaeng District, Rayong Province that features a bronze statue of the poet and three sculptures depicting characters from his works. The grounds extend across a large area near the mouth of the Rayong River and display information about his life and literary contributions.
Construction of the memorial began in 1955 when Prime Minister Plaek Pibulsongkram laid the foundation stone, but work halted for several years. The project resumed and was finally completed in 1970.
The memorial celebrates one of Thailand's greatest poets and serves as a gathering place where Thai literature is honored and remembered. Visitors can sense how deeply the written word matters to the community through the displays and monuments spread across the grounds.
The grounds offer plenty of space to walk and explore, with paths that lead you through the different sculptures and information boards. It is best to arrive early in the day to avoid the heat and take in the area at a leisurely pace.
The memorial was created by four different sculptors, each bringing their own artistic style to the work and showing different approaches to interpreting the poet's legacy. The variety in the sculptures creates an interesting dialogue about how art can celebrate literature in multiple ways.
