It is the largest mosque in the city, and one of the best-known sights of Istanbul, built in 1557 by Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent.
The mosque's design is a culmination of two centuries of both Ottoman mosque and Byzantine church development.
It incorporates some Byzantine elements of the neighboring Hagia Sophia with traditional Islamic architecture.
The Süleymaniye Mosque is surrounded by a large garden, offering stunning views over the Golden Horn.
