Nicomedia, Ancient city in Turkey
Nicomedia was the metropolis of Bithynia under the Roman Empire.
It was founded in 712/11 BC as a Megarian colony and was originally known as Astacus.
The city was the location of the martyrdom of Saint Adrian of Nicomedia.
Today, the area is part of the modern city of Izmit.
Nicomedia was the eastern and most senior capital city of the Roman Empire between 286 and 324.
