Aphrodisias, Ancient city in Turkey
Aphrodisias was a small ancient Greek Hellenistic city in the historic Caria cultural region of western Anatolia, Turkey.
It was named after Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of love, who had here her unique cult image, the Aphrodite of Aphrodisias.
The city was renowned for its sculpture school and marble quarries that produced sculpture for all over the Roman Empire.
Today, it is an archaeological site and one of Turkey's UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
The city contains many well-preserved ruins including a theatre, an Odeon, a stadium and a Tetrapylon.
