Korosten, Regional administrative center in Zhytomyr Oblast, Ukraine
Korosten is a regional administrative center in Zhytomyr Oblast, Ukraine, extending along the banks of the Uzh River at an elevation of 171 meters (561 feet) above sea level. The town functions as an important transportation junction in the northern region, connecting several main routes through the surrounding forests and fields.
The settlement emerged in 705 as Iskorosten and served as the capital of the Drevlians until its destruction in 945. Princess Olga attached burning materials to birds that returned to their nests in the town, setting the wooden structures ablaze.
The International Potato Pancakes Festival takes place every September in Drevlian Park, bringing visitors to cooking competitions and traditional culinary demonstrations. Families gather around long tables where local cooks show how to prepare and season the classic pancakes in the old style.
The area is easy to explore on foot, as main streets extend outward from the riverfront and most public facilities are located in the central part. Visitors can orient themselves at intersections where signs point to nearby facilities and neighborhoods.
The area around the town yields several natural resources such as granite, marble, peat, and titanium that are processed in local facilities. These mineral deposits have shaped the work of many residents for generations, employed in quarries, workshops, and factories.
