This town is located in Cherkasy Oblast in central Ukraine, about 200 kilometers southwest of Kyiv. It stretches along the Umanka River and is surrounded by flat agricultural land that extends to the horizon.
The settlement began in the early 1600s as a Polish fortress and served as a base against raids from the south. Over the centuries, it changed hands several times between Polish, Ottoman, and Russian control.

The town sits on the main road between Kyiv and Odesa and can be reached by bus or train. The center is walkable, and most points of interest lie within a short distance of each other.
The Sofiyivka Park from the late 1700s contains over 2,000 tree species and was created by a Polish count for his wife. The park displays artificial grottoes, waterfalls, and small islands connected by winding paths.
