New Safe Confinement, Containment structure in Ukraine.
The Chernobyl New Safe Confinement is a massive steel structure built to encase the nuclear reactor at Chernobyl.
Constructed between 2010 and 2018, it was designed to replace the aging and hastily-built sarcophagus that was erected immediately after the 1986 disaster.
It represents a significant international cooperation effort, with over 28 countries contributing to its funding.
Its purpose is to prevent the release of radioactive contaminants, protect the reactor from external impacts, and facilitate the decommissioning of the reactor.
It is the largest movable land-based structure ever built.
