Haivoron, town in Kirovohrad Oblast of western Ukraine
Haivoron is a small town in the Kirovohrad region of Ukraine, situated beside the Southern Bug River. Its defining feature is a narrow-gauge railway with a 750-millimeter track width, one of the last of its kind in Europe, complete with working steam locomotives and period railway cars.
The narrow-gauge railway was built to connect small towns and transport goods across the region, but most routes have since closed. Haivoron remains one of the few places where these trains still operate, keeping this transport method from the past alive.
The narrow-gauge railway defines how the town looks and functions today, with tracks and old trains visible throughout the main streets. Local residents and visiting enthusiasts maintain this railway heritage as a shared source of pride and identity.
The town is small and easy to walk around, accessible by train or bus, and suitable for a short visit. It is wise to check ahead about train schedules, as rides are not offered every day and are often arranged on specific occasions.
In 2021 a historic steam train ran for the last time in regular service here, with tickets selling out quickly as people wanted to witness this rare event. Local railway enthusiasts continue to work on reviving regular passenger service to keep this fading tradition alive.
