Samar

Samar is a city situated along the right bank of the Samara River in Dnipropetrovsk Oblast, roughly 27 kilometers from central Dnipro. The settlement spreads across relatively flat terrain and serves as a connecting point between several major routes in the region.

The settlement began in 1650 as Samarchyk and relocated to its present site in 1784, initially called Novomoskovsk. The name became Samar in 2024, marking the beginning of a new chapter for the town.

The Trinity Cathedral, constructed in 1778 without using nails, represents exceptional craftsmanship and religious heritage of the Dnipropetrovsk region.

The city sits on important railway lines and the Moscow-Crimea highway that connect Kharkiv and Dnipropetrovsk. Visitors will find good access via these routes, though checking opening times for local sites ahead of time is wise.

The population includes a mixture of ethnic groups with Ukrainians representing 80 percent and Russians 13 percent of the total 69,855 residents.
