Mariupol International Airport, airport
Mariupol International Airport is an international airport serving the city of Mariupol in southeastern Ukraine near the Russian border. The facility features a paved runway, a terminal building with waiting areas, a café, and retail shops for passengers.
The airport was founded in 1930 and began operations in spring 1931 with its first flight to Berdyansk. During the Soviet era it became a busy hub handling up to 120,000 passengers yearly, gained international status in 2004, and closed in 2014 due to regional conflict.
The airport is located near the main roads of the city, making it straightforward to reach by car, taxi, or shuttle. The terminal facilities are functional and clearly organized with signage that guides travelers easily to check-in areas and waiting zones.
A serious aircraft accident occurred in 1977 when a plane landing in dense fog struck a pole, causing a fire and fatalities. This incident led to improved safety measures that were implemented at the facility afterward.
