House with Chimeras

The House with Chimeras is a six-story building in Kharkiv that combines Art Nouveau style with English Gothic elements in its design. The exterior walls feature numerous animal sculptures that include both land creatures and sea life, arranged across multiple levels of the facade.

Architect Volodymyr Pokrovskyi designed this structure in 1914 as an early modern building in Kharkiv. The project introduced innovative concrete construction techniques that were relatively new to the architectural practices of the time.

The hunting scenes carved into the building reflect the architect's personal passion, shown through detailed animal sculptures that cover both the outside and inside surfaces. These decorative choices reveal what mattered to the designer and add a layer of meaning to the structure.

The building sits in central Kharkiv near administrative areas and is viewable from both Bankova Street and Ivan Franko Square. Due to its location on a slope, the structure reveals different numbers of floors depending on which side you approach from.

The building was among the first projects in the region to use reinforced concrete on a large scale, a technique that would reshape construction methods in the decades that followed. This early adoption of modern materials made it a turning point in local building practices.
