Saint Elisabeth Fortress

Saint Elisabeth Fortress is a former military installation in Kropyvnytskyi defined by a six-pointed star-shaped layout reinforced with earthen ramparts and fortified walls. The complex contains multiple buildings and towers distributed across its grounds.

The fortress was founded in 1754 under orders from Empress Elizabeth Petrovna as a defensive outpost against Tatar raids. Its construction and ongoing defense required significant labor and resources from the surrounding region.

The fortress served as a military installation but gradually transformed into a hub for education and intellectual life. Visitors came here to access institutions that promoted learning and cultural development.

Visitors can walk across the grounds to examine structures from different periods that remain today. Most areas are accessible on foot, with some sections featuring open spaces and others containing old buildings to explore.

Underground passages and hidden chambers beneath the site once served practical military functions such as supply storage and escape routes. These concealed networks offer insight into the day-to-day operations of fortress life.
