Mezhyhirya, Former presidential estate in Vyshhorod Raion, Ukraine
Mezhyhirya is a museum complex and park in Vyshhorod Raion on the right bank of the Dnieper River, roughly 18 kilometers north of Kyiv. The estate covers around 140 hectares and includes stables, a shooting range, tennis courts, a yacht pier and an automobile museum.
A monastery stood on this site until 1923, when the Bolsheviks closed it and converted the area into a government residence. Viktor Yanukovych took control of the estate in 2007 through a contested privatization and expanded it considerably during his presidency.
Following Yanukovych's removal in February 2014, the grounds opened to the public and became a place where citizens can see the results of corruption and abuse of power firsthand. Today the site serves as a reference point in conversations about political responsibility in Ukraine.
Guided tours offer insights into the grounds and explain recent Ukrainian political history. Visitors should wear comfortable shoes, as the sprawling site requires plenty of walking.
A Finnish-built clubhouse called Honka stands on the grounds and displays Scandinavian timber craftsmanship. Alongside a golf course and an ostrich farm, the estate also houses a private automobile collection with rare models.
