Holy Trinity Cathedral, Brailiv, Orthodox monastery in Brailiv, Ukraine
Holy Trinity Cathedral in Brailiv is an Orthodox monastery complex in the small town of Brailiv, in western Ukraine. It consists of a central church building, a baroque gate tower, and rows of monastic cells running along both sides of the main structure.
The monastery was founded in 1635 by the magnate Michael Kropyvnytskyi and originally stood at a different location in town. In 1845, the Orthodox community moved into the former building of the Trinitarian Order, which became the complex visitors see today.
The monastery is home to two icons of the Mother of God, the Brailiv-Pochaiv and the Brailiv-Czestochowa, which draw pilgrims from the surrounding region. Visitors can see worshippers lighting candles and praying in front of these images during their visit.
The entrance to the monastery is on Monastyrska Street and is easy to spot thanks to the gate built in Moscow Baroque style. Visitors should dress modestly, as the site remains an active place of worship.
The Polish King Stanisław August came to the site in 1787 specifically to view paintings by the artist Johann Prachtel. Some of those works are still kept in the complex and can be seen during a visit.
