The gymnasium, established in 1865, moved to its current building in 1883 after construction that began in 1881 under Austro-Hungarian administration.
The educational institution received its name in honor of Ukrainian artist Ivan Trush in 1999, following its restoration as a gymnasium in 1997.

The gymnasium served as both military barracks and hospital facilities during World War I and World War II, later returning to its educational function.
