Зоопарк ХІІ Місяців, Animal park in Demydiv, Ukraine
The Twelve Months Zoo sits on a wooded site of about 16 hectares and houses over 100 animal species, including aardvarks and white-handed gibbons. The enclosures are arranged along winding paths that pass through trees and small ponds.
The site opened in the early 2010s and has since undergone several renovation phases to create modern animal enclosures. The newer sections follow design concepts based on observations of international zoo architecture.
The name refers to a Slavic fairy tale in which the twelve months of the year appear as living characters. Visitors move through differently designed areas that each correspond to a habitat and recall different climate zones.
The paths are mostly paved and allow loops through all themed sections. In the morning and late afternoon, the animals are usually more active and easier to observe.
The grounds feature a replica of Neuschwanstein Castle that serves as an unusual landmark. Next to it, a restaurant serves Bavarian-style dishes, even though the park is in Ukraine.
