Église Sainte-Marie

Église Sainte-Marie is a church building in Sarlat-la-Canéda featuring Gothic design with pointed arches, ribbed vaults, and intricate stone carving throughout its structure. The building was transformed into a covered market space with mezzanine levels for public events and gatherings.

Construction started in 1368 under architect Jacques Caviale but was halted due to military conflicts between France and England. Work resumed and the building was completed in 1431.

The church building underwent a transformation in 2001, becoming a covered market space of 400 square meters with mezzanine levels for cultural events.

An elevator in the bell tower reaches a viewing platform 27 meters (90 feet) high offering views across the city. The building functions as a market space during certain times, so visit timing depends on its scheduled use.

The two entrance doors are custom-made metal pieces that soar to an impressive height above standard doors. Each door weighs several tons and displays intricate metalwork in its design.
