York Castle, Medieval castle in York, England
The castle consists of a stone keep named Clifford's Tower positioned atop a raised earthen mound, with remnants of defensive walls and courtyards below.
William the Conqueror ordered the construction of York Castle in 1068 to establish control over northern England following the Norman invasion.
The castle grounds preserve archaeological evidence from multiple periods, including Roman fortifications and an Anglian burial ground beneath the medieval structures.
Visitors can reach the castle by following signs from York city center, with parking facilities available at the nearby Castle Car Park.
Two separate castles existed in York during medieval times, with York Castle and Baile Hill positioned on opposite sides of River Ouse.
