Caerphilly Castle, Medieval castle in Caerphilly, Wales
The fortress spans over 30 acres with massive stone walls, defensive towers, and extensive water defenses surrounding the central structure on an artificial island.
Gilbert de Clare initiated construction in 1268 to counter Welsh prince Llywelyn ap Gruffudd, completing the majority of works within three years.
The castle introduced concentric defense systems to Britain, influencing the design of subsequent fortifications built by Edward I across North Wales.
The castle opens daily from March to June between 9:30 AM and 5 PM, with extended hours until 6 PM during July and August.
The southeast tower leans at an angle due to damage sustained during the Civil War, resembling the inclination of the Tower of Pisa.
