Aerial Lift Bridge, Transportation landmark in Duluth, Minnesota
The Aerial Lift Bridge is a major landmark in the port city of Duluth, Minnesota.
Originally built in 1905 as an extremely rare transporter bridge, the first of just two such bridges ever constructed in the United States.
The Aerial Lift Bridge has become an important symbol of the city and is even featured on the city's seal.
The bridge can be lifted to its full height in about a minute, allowing large ships to pass underneath.
It's one of the few vertical lift bridges in the world that are significantly longer than they are wide.
