Originally built by George Washington Parke Custis, it was later home to Confederate General Robert E. Lee.
The house is now run by the National Park Service and serves as a memorial to Lee's attempts to heal the nation after the Civil War.
Visitors can explore the house and surrounding grounds with guided tours available.
It served as a plantation estate for more than 80 slaves before the civil war.
