Springfield

Springfield is a community in Fairfax County, Virginia, composed of residential streets and commercial districts. The area sits close to the capital and stretches across roughly 25 square kilometers.

The railroad arrived in the 19th century and created a small junction that handled passengers and freight. Decades later, Edward Carr began developing residential lots, which accelerated suburban growth after World War Two.

The name refers to a spring on Nathaniel Johnston's farm that once supplied water to passing wagons and travelers. The shopping center now draws families who come to eat, shop, or simply walk through its corridors.

Two major highways cross the area and connect households to distant destinations across the region. Metro trains offer a link to downtown Washington, so visitors can choose between driving and public transit.

A park covering roughly 500 acres (200 hectares) stretches around a lake and offers fishing spots plus trails through wooded hills. A narrow-gauge railway runs along the shore and lets riders take in views of the water.
