The Statue of Freedom, also known as Armed Freedom or simply Freedom, is a bronze statue designed by Thomas Crawford that, since 1863, has crowned the dome of the U.S. Capitol building in Washington, D.C.
Originally commissioned in 1855, it was cast in five main sections by Clark Mills and installed atop the Capitol in 1863.
The statue is a symbol of freedom and democracy, representing the ideals of the nation.
The original plaster model is on display in the Capitol Visitor Center.
The statue stands 19.5 feet tall and weighs approximately 15,000 pounds.
