The construction of the original Capitol began in 1793 and has been built, burnt, rebuilt, extended, and restored.

The complex includes the Capitol, the Senate and House Office Buildings, the Supreme Court Building, the Library of Congress, the U.S. Botanic Garden, and more.
The Capitol Dome, made of cast iron, was designed by Thomas U. Walter and constructed between 1855-1866.
