Located south of Lake Erie at 220 meters elevation, Fredonia extends across 13.4 square kilometers of land without any registered water bodies.
The land was purchased by Robert Morris from Massachusetts in 1791 for resale to the Holland Land Company, with first settlers arriving in 1803.
The Fredonia Academy, founded in 1824, marked the beginning of higher education in Chautauqua County and later transformed into the State Normal School.
The village administration conducts water service inspections to maintain safety standards and compliance with state regulations regarding lead and copper levels.
William Hart created the first natural gas well in the United States on Canadaway Creek in 1825, leading to the establishment of Fredonia Gas Light Company.
