Bergsøysund Bridge, Pontoon and truss bridge in Møre og Romsdal, Norway.
The Bergsøysund Bridge is a steel road bridge connecting Aspøya island to Bergsøya across the strait, spanning just under 1 kilometer. The structure consists of 13 spans, seven of which are constructed as floating pontoons with concrete chambers.
The bridge opened in 1992, combining American floating bridge technology with Norwegian expertise from offshore platform construction. The project was developed to connect Kristiansund more efficiently to the mainland and improve regional transportation links.
The bridge structure represents the engineering capabilities of Norwegian maritime construction, marking a significant advancement in Nordic transportation infrastructure.
The bridge is part of the regular road infrastructure and can be crossed by car. The structure adapts to tidal fluctuations while remaining stable, making it a reliable connection for traffic in this region.
The structure can adapt to tidal movements of about 2 meters while maintaining its alignment, a technical feature many visitors overlook. This ability is possible because the floating pontoon sections can move vertically while the entire structure stays level.
