Sør-Spitsbergen National Park

Located in the southern region of Spitsbergen island, this national park extends over 13,286 square kilometers, including 5,029 square kilometers of land and 8,257 square kilometers of marine areas.

The Norwegian government established this protected area in 1973, incorporating Wedel Jarlsberg Land, Torell Land, and Sørkapp Land into its boundaries.

The park contains remnants of 17th-century whaling stations, reflecting the historical maritime activities of early European explorers in the Arctic region.

Access to the park requires special permits and guided tours, with transportation limited to boats or aircraft due to its remote Arctic location.

Four bird sanctuaries - Sørkapp, Dunøyane, Isøyene, and Olsholmen - provide critical nesting grounds for eider ducks, barnacle geese, and numerous seabird colonies.
