Fjell Fortress

Fjell Fortress is a coastal defense installation in Sotra that hides an extensive network of tunnels and bunkers carved into the mountains. The site reveals how defense systems were built directly into the rock face.

The installation was built during wartime as a coastal defense system when occupation forces systematically excavated the mountain. A heavy gun installation was positioned to protect the harbor and shoreline.

Museum Vest maintains the fortress as a heritage site, presenting exhibitions about Norwegian coastal defense and military operations during World War II.

Visitors can explore the tunnel systems on their own or with guided tours that show the inner workings of the fortress. There is also an exhibition space where you can learn more about the history of coastal defense.

Twenty-five eastern European prisoners lost their lives during the construction of this fortress, which required digging 17 meters vertically into the mountain.
