Varangerfjord

Varangerfjord extends 100 kilometers into Norway's northeastern territory, reaching a maximum width of 70 kilometers as it connects with the Barents Sea.

During the 19th century, King Oscar I formed an alliance with Britain and France in 1855 to protect the fjord from potential Russian territorial claims.

The fjord region maintains strong connections to Sami traditions, reflected in the local architecture, road signs, and continuous cultural practices of indigenous communities.

Visitors can access the fjord through multiple municipalities including Vardø, Vadsø, Nesseby, and Sør-Varanger, with regular maritime transportation services connecting coastal settlements.

The northern coast of Varangerfjord encompasses 55,450 hectares of protected bird habitats, supporting populations of Atlantic puffins and lesser white-fronted geese.
