Oslo Rygge, airport
Oslo Rygge is an airport located near Råde and Moss in Norway, approximately 60 kilometers from the capital. The facility features a runway over 2,400 meters long, a modern terminal with large windows offering views of the apron, parking areas, and serves both civilian and military purposes.
An airfield was first built during the early 1940s and used during World War II, later reopened by the Norwegian military as a base in the 1950s with fighter jets and rescue helicopters. Commercial operations started in October 2007 but ceased in November 2016 after budget airlines withdrew their services.
The airport served as a hub for budget travelers seeking affordable connections across Europe. Airlines like Ryanair brought an international flow of passengers through its terminals, making it a crossroads for people from various backgrounds heading to sunny destinations and major cities.
The airport terminal is easily accessible by car, train, or bus, with the Moss train station located just a short distance away. Clear signage guides you through the facility, and the flat terrain makes navigation straightforward for all visitors.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, the empty terminal was converted into a testing and vaccination center, serving the local community in an entirely new way. This practical repurposing demonstrates how the airport adapted to new needs even without commercial flights.
