Bastøy Prison

The prison spans 2.6 square kilometers on an island in the Oslo fjord, featuring wooden cottages, farmland, and recreational areas for 115 male inmates.

Originally established in 1503, the facility transformed from a harsh juvenile detention center into a progressive prison focused on rehabilitation after 1982.

Norwegian correctional principles emphasize human dignity through comfortable living conditions, work opportunities, and educational programs to reduce repeat offenses.

Inmates maintain cottages, work in agriculture, care for animals, and receive chef-prepared meals while following three main rules: no violence, alcohol, or drugs.

The facility operates with only five staff members overnight and maintains a 16 percent recidivism rate through its system of increased inmate responsibility.
