Bergen Airport, International airport in Flesland, Norway
Bergen Airport is an international airport in Flesland within Bergen Municipality that handles over six million travelers annually through domestic and international flights connecting western Norway to European destinations. The passenger terminals process arrivals and departures with connections to regional Norwegian cities and capitals across the continent.
Construction began in 1953 with 300 workers in two shifts who removed half a million cubic meters of rock to create runways and terminal areas. Before this site Bergen used water aerodromes at Flatøy Sandviken and Herdla for early aviation.
The name Flesland comes from the original farm on this site and recalls how agricultural land became one of western Norway's busiest transport hubs. Travelers today see a modern facility that connects business visitors and tourists daily between Bergen and destinations across Europe.
The journey to Bergen city center takes around 25 minutes by car or via the Bergen Light Rail that departs directly from the terminal. The terminals are well signposted and offer basic facilities for travelers transferring between domestic and international flights.
The airport location required massive rock blasting and engineering work to create level ground for runways on the hilly Norwegian terrain. This engineering effort transformed rough landscape into one of Scandinavia's busiest transport hubs.
