Vår Frue Church, Medieval church in central Trondheim, Norway
Vår Frue Church is a stone building in central Trondheim combining Romanesque and Gothic elements. Its long nave features a flat ceiling while a spired tower with pyramid-shaped roof rises above the downtown streetscape.
Construction began in the late 1100s, and the building underwent multiple reconstructions following three major fires in 1651, 1681, and 1708. These destructive events shaped its current form through successive restoration campaigns.
The house of prayer was originally named Mariakirken and displays a carved altarpiece from 1744 created by Heinrich Kuhnemann. It remains a place where people gather for worship and community events.
Located on Kongens gate 5 in downtown Midtbyen, this place of worship remains open daily for prayer and reflection. With capacity for around 540 people, visitors can easily step inside for a quiet moment.
A 1957 renovation removed the exterior whitewash to reveal the original medieval stone surface beneath. This work, directed by John Egil Tverdahl, restored the facade to its authentic, unfinished appearance.
