Minnesund Railway Bridge, Railway bridge in Eidsvoll Municipality, Norway
The Minnesund Railway Bridge crosses Mjøsa Lake using 13 spans that combine truss and arch construction techniques. Its total length of 362 meters makes it a prominent structure stretching across the water between two communities.
This structure was completed in 1879 as a vital connection on the Dovre Line linking Oslo and Trondheim. After more than 140 years of railway service, train traffic ended in 2023.
The bridge now serves as a shared space where walkers and cyclists pause to view the lake from its length. It has become a place where people experience the landscape directly while crossing from one shoreline community to the other.
The bridge is now open to pedestrians and cyclists with separate or wide shared paths. Visitors should prepare for changeable weather and wear proper footwear, especially when winds sweep across the open water.
The longest single span reaches 82 meters, revealing the structural ambition of 19th-century Norwegian builders. This extended section demonstrates the engineering challenge of bridging such a wide expanse of water.
