Oddane Fort, Coastal defense fort in Nevlunghavn, Norway
Oddane Fort is a coastal defense installation positioned on a rocky headland near Larvik that once monitored approaches to several towns. The site features four 105mm gun positions, command bunkers, and underground structures carved into the rock to blend with the landscape.
German forces built the fort in 1941 during the occupation of Norway to defend harbor entrances and shipping routes. Military operations continued at the site until 2005, making it one of the longest-active Norwegian coastal defense installations.
The fort bears the name of the Oddane family, who have farmed this land for generations and lived alongside the military installation. The place reflects how local communities adapted to the presence of armed defenses throughout the decades.
Visitors can walk through preserved barracks, bunkers, and gun emplacements to get a sense of how the installation operated. Wear sturdy shoes and watch your footing on uneven ground, especially after rain or during windy conditions.
This is the only completely preserved coastal defense fort in Norway that retains all its original structures from the time it was built. This intact state makes it exceptionally rare among Scandinavian military sites and difficult to find elsewhere in the region.
