Muraviev-Apostol's house

Muraviev-Apostol's house is a classical estate in Moscow's Basmanny District featuring symmetrical columns, tall windows, and a formal entrance facing Staraya Basmannaya Street. The restored interior preserves original architectural details and period furnishings from the early 1800s.

The house was home to the Muraviev-Apostol family, and member Sergey led the Decembrist uprising against imperial rule in 1825. This made the property a focal point in early organized resistance by Russian nobility against absolute authority.

The house displays the role of the Decembrists through exhibitions showing how these nobles imagined reform and change. You can see how their ideas shaped discussions among the Russian aristocracy of that time.

You can walk through the restored rooms and examine the original furnishings and architectural details up close. Plan to spend enough time to see the exhibitions thoughtfully and appreciate the layout of the different spaces.

The house remained largely inaccessible for many years until it opened as a museum dedicated to the Decembrist movement, holding documents and artifacts found nowhere else in the city.
