Mariedal Castle, Baroque château in Götene Municipality, Sweden
Mariedal Castle is a stone baroque structure with two stories, featuring ornamental stucco ceilings and wooden wall panels. Two symmetrical wings extend from the main building, creating a balanced architectural composition.
Admiral Magnus Gabriel De la Gardie initiated construction of the castle in 1666 and named it after his wife Maria Euphrosyne, sister of King Charles X. The estate passed through various noble families who shaped its character over the following centuries.
The castle houses an extensive portrait collection of the Sparrerska family, showing Swedish noble heritage through artistic documentation. These works display the lineage and connections of an important aristocratic family across many generations.
The castle is privately owned and closed to visitors, but a seasonal waffle café operates on the surrounding grounds during summer months. The exterior grounds offer a pleasant setting to view the estate from outside.
Between 1740 and 1786, resident Countess Eva Ekeblad conducted agricultural experiments at the estate and contributed to Swedish scientific advancement. She was among the first women to pursue serious research in farming and food production.
