Kapellskär, Maritime port in Norrtälje Municipality, Sweden
Kapellskär is a ferry port on the east coast of Sweden, in Norrtälje Municipality, with routes connecting to Estonia, Finland, and the Åland Islands. The port has several berths deep enough to handle large passenger ferries as well as cargo vessels.
Kapellskär was developed as a port during the 20th century to handle growing ferry traffic between Sweden and the Baltic countries as well as Finland. Over time, the routes serving it have changed more than once, with notable shifts in ferry operations taking place in early 2023.
Kapellskär is one of the few Swedish ports with a direct ferry route to the Åland Islands, an autonomous region with its own flag and a special customs status. Travelers heading there often notice this difference at the terminal, where the boarding process follows rules distinct from standard EU crossings.
The port is easy to reach via the E18 road, and there is ample parking along with check-in facilities for ferry passengers. Arriving early is a good idea, especially during busy travel periods, as boarding procedures can take some time.
Although Kapellskär is north of Stockholm, the sailing time on some routes is shorter than from other ports in the region because its position further east cuts the open-sea distance. This makes it a practical choice for freight operators who need faster crossings.
