Torslanda Airport, Former airport complex in Gothenburg, Sweden
Torslanda Airport was an airport complex with three runways, a control tower built in 1969, and terminal buildings situated on a coastal area. Most of the original infrastructure was demolished in 1997 to make way for the Amhult residential development featuring hundreds of homes.
The airport was inaugurated in 1923 by Crown Prince Gustav Adolf during the International Aviation Exhibition in Gothenburg. It operated as an active aviation hub for more than five decades before being decommissioned.
The former terminal building has been repurposed as a shopping center that keeps the site connected to its aviation past through its retained structure and purpose.
The site today is mainly occupied by modern residential buildings and commercial spaces, with the old control tower preserved within a golf course area. Visitors can view the surviving tower structure standing among the green grounds within the transformed urban landscape.
The control tower stands unusually within a modern golf course, creating a striking contrast between aviation history and contemporary leisure use. This rare juxtaposition shows how past heritage and present urban transformation coexist in the same space.
